The diagram below illustrates how the application has been designed in an onion-skin fashion

The two core system layers are the design structure and the core functionality layer. The design structure consists of generic objects that were used to design the nuQ application. Around this design structure some core payroll and HR functionality has been developed. The inner design structure allows competent payroll (and HR) experts to build fairly complex functionality, utilising standard functions and capabilities provided by the core. The complexity of the functionality determines the skill required, but where really complex logic is required a passing knowledge of VBScript will come in handy, although programming experience is not required.
On top of this core functionality some standard customisation will be delivered with the system. The functionality provided by the core system is such that administrators can add database elements, define input (or output) screens, link own-defined elements to existing or new elements through user defined (or existing) functions, and effectively build an additional user functionality layer on top of the functionality already provided by the standard system.
